The Youth Proficiency Tutor (YPST) course covers everything you need to run air rifle, pistol or sport crossbow as an activity. Our courses page will guide you to a YPS tutor course we are hosting, or delivering instructors for, over the coming months.
The NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme Tutor course, also know as the YPS tutor course, is the minimum qualification required to run air rifle, air pistol and sport crossbow as an activity for UK Scouting, Girlguiding UK and other uniformed youth groups. Similarly, it is also the standard qualification that the activity centre sector uses.
All of the YPS tutor courses take 2 days to complete on their own, however, a combined rifle/pistol course can be completed in 3 days because there’s loads of overlap between the courses. You can complete a single day supplement in the other discipline if you already have an NSRA Youth Proficiency Tutor qualification with rifle or pistol.

- Law relating to air rifles and pistols
- Range and air rifle safety
- Equipment, different rifles, pistols and targets
- Range construction both indoor and outdoor
- Basic target shooting skills
- Sighting an airgun and different sights
- Session plans for an activity session
- Scoring targets and competition
- Shooting games and training ideas
Course participants need to be age 18 or over to complete the YPS tutor course.
Remember, you need to be over 21 to supervise a group of under 14’s in a shooting session.

Want to host your own Youth Proficiency Scheme Course?
If you have a group of people who need the qualification then we can run a NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme Tutor Course with you at your own venue. Any bespoke YPS course we run will allow for between 6 and 12 participants. If you don’t have a group of 12, many venues advertise their additional places to help cover the cost.
- You would supply a suitable range facility. For instance, this can be a temporary space as long as the equipment to turn it into a shooting range is provided.
- We will supply the YPS course tutor, course materials and manage the certification process with the NSRA
- Lastly, We can also supply equipment if required
